Over these past 35 plus years that I've been in the music business I have observed many things and people that I have seen and met in my travels. I thank God for all the many wonderful musicians I have met and also for the many blessings that He has poured on me and I give Him all the praise. Yet I find in the ranks of fellow musicians there has always been a trend that I call professional jealousy. I'm sure that most of my fellow professional colleagues will be in agreement with me. It seems wherever I have played - especially in Jamborees where there are several performers there is always competition and a certain amount of jealousy between performers. In my estimation this should never be. If we feel we have a calling to do the Lord's work then there is no room for competition. The Bible says we are to honor one another and prefer one another. Not compete with one another. Competition can be expected among non believers but it should never be evident among believers. At the same time competition is more evident among non professional than professionals. I am speaking about those that are wannabes. They think they can sing because they can hold a tune and perhaps someone has heard them who has a tin ear or tone deaf and encouraged them to get into the singing business. These people seem to think they are the greatest but they really they should restrict their singing and playing to Nursing Homes or at home, not Jamborees or other professional venues. They can't seem to understand that in order to make it in the music world you have to pay your dues before being allowed to sing along side those who do music for a profession. One thing I have observed when I have been in Nashville. I have met some awesome players and singers there but the more professional they are the less competitive they are. They respect one another and give honor where honor is due. Granted there are exceptions to the rule but on the whole I have found very little competition between fellow musicians in Nashville. As a professional musician I have tremendous respect for those fellow musicians who are in the same category. The only way to gain experience is to do it. The more you perform the better you will become. And I learned from observing and playing with professionals. But being a professional does not mean that anyone who can play an instrument and sing belongs in the same category. It's not an overnight thing. I have been singing and playing since I was 14 years old and I'm still learning and will continue to do so no matter how long I remain in it. |
