One Month In

Christmas is over, and so is New Years and before anyone realized it February was upon us. I took this year very differently. I noticed each day passing, and the struggle to make it through one more day after another. The three week mark passed by and I decided to look back at what I had accomplished. I am a task oriented person, and for all those out there who share this perspective I am here to tell you I have done nothing compared to other mission experiences. I have yet to preach, or dig a trench, run a DVBS program or help in the primary school. These results are pretty discouraging and often I wonder what I am actually doing here. All is not lost, for God has been faithfully been working. Every day I study more of the Portuguese language. I am connecting with children from the ages of 3 – 13 for hours every week, being Jesus and loving them. My studies on social issues and assisting those in poverty continue to be worked on while I observe them in reality around me. I do not find myself on another mission experience but actually living in the reality of missions.

One of the greatest things I have experienced here is the spending hours with God in the morning and before bed. This has included reading through the Old Testament and memorizing the life of Jesus.

Often Sunday School told me the Judges were great people who saved Israel from their oppressors and we should be like them. The book of judges is filled with men who led Israel but we often forget what else they did: Gideon made a gold ephod which was worshiped by all Israel; Abimelech murdered his brothers and Jephthah sacrificed his daughter to the LORD. To say the least I am appalled at the actions of those who fill our Christian heritage.

I shared my thoughts with a few who assured me there was still hope. From the book of Revelation one reads, “Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy” (Rev. 3:4). John goes on to say those who walk in white have overcome. My record against God was not clean but he has washed it with the blood of Christ. God can use men of all kinds for his purposes, but I want to humble myself before God and keep myself pure in all things for his glory. To live a life repented before God.
Corbett and Fikkert write the book When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor…and Yourself, end off with the most important part to poverty alleviation: first coming to terms of our own repentance and serving from that position.

A one month summary is impossible to give but here is my best shot: I have settled in and moved in the little house—at the top of this newsletter—and find after cleaning it up to be a very nice place. I work four eight-hour shifts a week in the home, known as Casa Elohim. This includes eating with the children, washing dishes, cleaning up the place, spending lots of time with preschoolers, and trying to interact with the older ones. Here there is no “project” but the goal of building relationships with these children so they may see God’s love for them and learn to experience it themselves.
One weekend I found myself in Heliopolis, a very large favela in São Paulo. Built quickly and illegally favelas are a culture within themselves. I spent some time with a couple who are working at mentoring youth and young adults to find Christ and see the opportunity they have at being a light in Heliopolis.
Another weekend I spent night out in the bush camping with some guys. One of the greatest things I got to observe was how so many “tasks” were turned into learning opportunities for the children and youth. If we take the time we can teach those who are following us the right way to do things, and; therefore, the right way to live.
My time here in Brazil is not what I expected but I take comfort knowing God has called me here for a purpose. Missions is not about doing, as much as about being. There is lots to learn; therefore, I stay busy, but each day is a blessing no matter how long it feels.
I know I am not here on my own strength and I thank all of you who are supporting me through prayer. To help you pray here are some prayer requests: financial stewardship—how do I use the money God has given me in the wisest way; courage to speak the language; and knowledge of how to be Jesus to the children here.
‘Brigado, e Deus Abençoe!
