This Month's Featured Writer
Singer/Songwriter Debbie Bergeron

I was born and raised in Victoria, BC out in the country side into a family of 3 kids. We lived on a hobby farm. My big brother was 1 1/2 years older and he had Down’s syndrome. I am in the middle with a younger sister of three years.
Growing up had lots of challenges between me and my brother, we spent a lot of time and holidays in the hospital. We also had animals, a pony and then a horse, which I loved.

My dad worked away from home a lot which added more to mom's Platter. She told me that GOD didn't give more than one could handle, but it was tough. My dad was my idol, he taught me lessons such as when you fall off the horse you get back in the saddle or you’ll never ride again, finish what you start, take pride in doing a good job. We rode the motorcycle together and he taught me how to do catwalks which terrorized my mom. He taught me how to drive the stick shift in the old Ford truck.

I have always loved music, art and being creative. Music became my best friend and I spent my free time learning how to plunk the guitar and learn the lyrics to songs.
I attended the same church mom attended as a kid and the preacher would even come and pick me up and take me to church at times. I felt the power of kindred spirit all singing out in praise. It really moved me. I fell away from church in my teenage years but HE kept a hold of me and was in my heart helping to direct my path.

My auntie really flamed the desire to sing when she set up the mic in the middle of our living room and said," come on Deb sing". She is still telling me that today. Family would gather in the Livingroom and they would all sing and play. There were guitars, fiddles, mouth organs, spoons, claps and lots of voices.

Mom also fueled the love of music by playing the piano after supper and we kids would gather around and sing. I think that we all loved that time so much.
So what does a kid who loves to sing do, why she joins the choir? It really broadened my horizons because we sang all genres of songs. I could sing natural harmony but I really learned so much.

My plan was to graduate, train as a nurse and work my way to Nashville. I did all that but not in that order . My life kind of side tracked when I married & had kids. It was kind of cool, because my babies were my audience.

I loved doing all the mom stuff, but something more was calling. So I started singing where ever they would let me. The writing rekindled and songs were pouring out. The first time I went into a recording studio was so exciting and a new world. It's very addicting, creating music.
I started singing at festivals and fairs, and soon realized that I really liked sharing my own songs. I was a member of the NSAI , Nashville Songwriting  Association international for 4 or 5 years. Which really helped to hone my writing skills. Then I became the Founding Vice President of the BC Songwriter Showcase Association. Song writers need a place to sing their songs to share with the public. I am very proud to say that the Association is still up and running today based out of Langley BC.
I made quite a few trips to Nashville and the time came to put my money where my mouth was and take that leap of faith and make an album, Makin' a Connection. There was so much on the line financially. Many questions, was I ready, were my songs good enough, would people buy the music.

In this time, GOD said,” okay, now it's time to write about ME. I've given you gifts, share them to help others come to know me and help others where you can.”
Well, off I went for another adventure. I worked with some awesome musicians who worked with the top artist's at that time. Recording was one thing, but when I got home, now came the task of how to market, promote, advertise, a whole new ball of wax. There's publicity too! Yikes. You really have a do as much as possible to help cut costs.
I am not saying that I did it right, but I made a dent. The opportunity came to record years later, a Christmas CD entitled The Gift and She Drives. She Drives was nominated for Album of the year.

It is amazing to me to think that these CD's and songs are playing or have been played around the world. That someone who lives in a tiny little town, their voice can be heard.
Music can really united the world and help with social needs. My songs have been used to help fundraise for the BC SPCA, Walk for Justice which tries to bring a voice to missing and murdered women; I wrote the song called Please Don't Forget Me,
Domestic Abuse, a song entitled Break the Chain, and the new song for the Innocence Lost Foundation which is building a community for the rehabilitation of child soldiers. The song is called When Innocence is Lost and of course The Power, is heard on Gospel Music Festivals Ministries on Memory Lane page. That's me, in the picture on the right hand corner.

I have been blessed in my life by people who GOD has sent to help direct me along the path. It's had its peaks and many valleys but I have sure learned from not only the successes but the so called mistakes. GOD gives the gifts and it's up to you to use these gifts where you can to help. Keep the faith.
