Understanding Missions

Time passes quickly some days, and other days you watch the clock and wait for that magic moment when you can go home. This month I experienced something really cool. My work shifts in the house have usually ended at 10:00 pm. Therefore some days I long for that time to come because the work is hard and I just want it to be over…at least that was how I thought. This month I have found living here to be phenomenal. I have found that I enjoy the house and the children here and find if I just live here, and not “work” here, then there is joy in what I do.  Something else caught my attention this month: more short-termers! Two men came for a week to experience what ABBA was like. I have done the short-term experience before and really enjoyed it. The fast pace, tourist mixed missions agenda—it is fun. After a month and a half here I know I have not truly experienced Brazil, never mind a week. I am thankful for these short experiences, which God uses to teach us many things, but they cannot allow a true living experience within a culture, or country. When one lives in a place there are hard times, good times, and time to build relationships and assimilate into the culture. This takes years. Short-term opportunities like this one allow one to experience part of something much bigger; but they do not really allow one to live the culture. This is humbling, knowing there is so much more to Brazil than I will be able to take home; however, it means I can go home and keep learning more about Canada!

Men we consider Faithful were not perfect and made mistakes, yet they remained Faithful to God and more importantly God remained Faithful to them.

God blessed me with the following personal revelation about missions and what it will mean for the rest of my life. Growing up I have had a heart for missions and can thank my parents for instilling this in me. God has fuelled this passion and here I am in Brazil. Mission is intentionally living in an incarnational way with those who are loved by God. Missions is PEOPLE, and I have a heart for people. I am an introvert who loves to connect and serve. Here in Brazil, I have lived with those who need God’s love. This is what God calls us to do wherever we are. Discipling our neighbours and living life with those around us. Why? Because that is what God did and does. I don’t know if I will be back to Brazil; but I know that wherever I am I want to go and live where God’s love is needed and not just talk about broken neighborhoods, and communities around me.
The Priest Ezra has been an inspiring example of a man living after God. Ezra was known by King Artaxerxes as, “Ezra the priest, a teacher of the Law of the God of heaven,” who had God’s law in his hands—he carried it with him (Ez. 7:12, 21; 7:14). He was well versed in the Law of Moses and had given his life to studying, living and teaching these laws. To top it all off he was in exile! Here is a man who knew the Word of God and lived by it. Being well versed means memorizing, meditating, and truly knowing something. He spoke of it often. Is this not what we want for our lives? The task ahead of us is to devote ourselves to the study, living and teaching of the God’s Word, just as he did (Ezra. 7:10; Matthew 28:18-20).

This month has been filled with learning experiences for me… While here in Brazil I was able to take a Restorative Justice course at the Church I have been attending. Restorative Justice is an alternative to the traditional judicial system where punishment is usually the tool to teach young offenders not to break the law. Restorative Justice allows an alternative where the offender is brought together with those affected and he has a chance to place himself in the victim’s position and work towards reconciliation and proper restoration to society. This is important for more than just judicial systems, but friends, family, church, school, and all other places where people interact in society. One of the biggest causes of injustice began with a broken relationship and being misunderstood. Therefore, prevention would include everyone listening more and building up the relationships with the people God has placed around us.
I also had the opportunity to go to a celebration party of one of the boys who graduated from Casa Elohim a few weeks earlier. The house here has a pool, soccer field, fruit trees, volunteers, and caring staff; however, that is not enough in a child’s life. After being with his new family for a while there was an emotional change in a positive direction, and he seemed genuinely happier than he had been here. This goes to strengthen ABBA’s stance that a Family is always better than the best institution.
Just over a month to go and I am still learning lots. I am understanding more of the language and the culture—though it is often a disappointing and hard journey. My time with God is equally as difficult, but also rewarding as I see the need for him to become greater in my life, and I less. Please continue to pray for strength, and guidance in my life as I serve God here. I want  him to be in the influence here and not me. It is the hearts of the Children, which matter, and not what I can do.
‘Brigado, e Deus Abençoe!
